“Every single time I hear that bell ring, and every time I hear someone tell their story, is a favorite memory. For me, that’s what it’s really about. It’s about camaraderie, respect, achievement, and pride. And it’s not only the person telling their story, but the reaction of everyone in the office around them. It’s pretty wonderful.”

Sitting on Chrysalis’ Board of Directors since 2011, Joan has cheered on many bell ringers. In addition to serving on the Board, Joan is the Co-Chair of the Development Committee (with previous #VolunteerSpotlight Steve) and sits on the Program Committee as well. As a member of both of these committees, Joan cultivates relationships with current and potential donors and consults with and advises staff on the effectiveness and efficiency of Chrysalis’ programming.

When asked what drew her to the organization, Joan shared that “what really struck me about Chrysalis was that concept of giving a hand up, not a hand out, combined with the fact that everyone comes to Chrysalis because it’s something that they want to do, as opposed to just a requirement for some other program. It’s just such a positive concept to me. It’s truly about people who said, ‘I want to change something in my life and I’m going to do what I need to do to do that.’”

As a member of the Board, Joan serves as an advocate for Chrysalis – a role that entails sharing with others what inspires her to continue to donate her time and talent to Chrysalis and our dedication to changing lives through jobs. When it comes to talking about our mission, she says, “Something I like to share with people is that getting a job has so many other effects than just getting a paycheck…it helps bring families back together. For whatever reason, they weren’t together, whether it was financial, or pride, or whatever reason, one of the incredible rolling effects of Chrysalis’ programming is that it helps reunite family members.”

Chrysalis is honored to have Joan’s continued commitment to our clients!
