Kathy, a Long Beach local and Chrysalis Orange County volunteer, knew she wanted to continue helping clients despite centers being closed to the public in early March. She was actually the first volunteer to begin providing Chrysalis clients with virtual services amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Prior to the “safer-at-home” ordinance from local governments, Kathy had been interning at Chrysalis for three months. She had experience volunteering while in high school but had to take a break when she began attending CSU Long Beach. She missed being able to connect with a variety of people though, so when she found Chrysalis online, she jumped at the opportunity to get involved.
“I went to the volunteer orientation and knew this was the right fit for me.”
Kathy’s eight hours a week at Chrysalis typically consisted of sitting down with clients one-on-one to assist with writing resumes, preparing for job interviews, and searching for job leads. When time allowed, she also enjoyed organizing the Resource Room, where clients have access to professional attire and hygiene products.
While at Chrysalis, she hoped to help clients feel confident about their resumes and during interviews so they could successfully showcase their skills and experiences. And, clients haven’t been the only ones impacted during these one-on-one sessions. While Kathy considers herself to be a bit shy, she shares that she has also come out of her shell and gained confidence since first walking through Chrysalis’ doors.
Now, she’s continuing to work with clients – but virtually, working on resumes and conducting practice interviews over the phone.
“When I heard that Chrysalis would not be able to continue services on-site, I knew I wanted to help in any way I could,” she says.
Though she is unable to work with clients face-to-face, Kathy hasn’t been discouraged and neither have clients. In fact, in continuing to effectively communicate and work with clients, she notes the appreciation she’s seen from everyone so far. Improving confidence and uplifting clients’ morale have always been key points for her, as it is with many volunteers. Now, perhaps more than ever, Kathy plays a large part in giving clients a confidence boost. In a time when steady employment is uncertain, many clients have been happy to continue receiving support from Chrysalis.
“It’s been great so far. There’s still that verbal contact that can help clients out in a time where it may be hard to keep positive after so much time in isolation.”
Although her work with Chrysalis is currently part of one of her college courses, she has no intention of ending her relationship with us when she finishes school.
“After graduating, I plan on continuing as a volunteer with Chrysalis. I am so humbled to be a part of Chrysalis’ Orange County team and helping so many people get to a career they enjoy.”
